Turning Points for Characters

I chose the theme 'Turning Points for Characters' because over the course of this workshop, we learned a lot about how music can convey a character's moods and accompany a scene. We practiced a lot by creating music to convey certain emotions, as well as music to represent certain characters. As we got deeper into the semester, I started working on creating music for different scenes and decided on my project theme. The scenes I used for my final project include scenes from Frozen, Mamma Mia 2, and Wandavision. Each of these films/shows depict characters who go through very sudden and severe changes in their lives. I am also a big fan of the scores in each work, so I was excited to work with these scenes. At first, I had a little trouble composing music for them because I'm already really familiar with the scores, so I had to work on disconnecting from any prior knowledge of the score and work with myself. Since my mind is constantly using music as a source of my thoughts, I ended up realizing it wasn't too hard to visualize what I wanted each scene to sound like. I just had translate my thoughts and emotions while watching the scenes into music, which ended up being a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy my work!

Frozen

This is the scene in Frozen where Anna sacrifices herself to save Elsa and freezes. She is then thawed as Elsa shows her love for her sister, not knowing that the key to thawing all the ice, and her sister, is love. The emotions conveyed are this scene is defeat and victory. I used different keys to try to convey the emotion in the song. In the first half when it was still very sad, I used D minor to show the sadness through the music. Then, when Anna is thawed, I switched to C major to show the happiness of the moment. Learning about the different keys in class helped a lot. With this piece, I was trying to pretty much just show these emotions through the music and show the turning point for the characters. Something I like about this piece is how it's silent after Anna freezes. It just leaves the audience with a very solemn feeling and focusing on the characters' reactions.

Mamma Mia

I chose the scene in Mamma Mia 2 where Donna is frolicking around then she goes back inside and finds out that Sam, her lover, is engaged, and she is basically the other woman. I used two emotions for this video. The first emotion is bliss because Donna is enjoying herself outdoors and in love, then it turns into betrayal/heartbreak when she finds out the truth about Sam. I used major and minor scales as well as different types of instruments and beats to convey these emotions. In class, we learned a lot about how different keys and instruments contribute to the emotion conveyed, so I tried to use what we learned. My process for creating this piece was firstly watching the scene to get a sense of what music I wanted. Of course, I had the song she sings in that scene stuck in my head, so I had to try to find a new sound. While watching the part where she is outside swinging her skirt around, I was reminded of Lorde's album 'Solar Power', so I listened to some songs for that to try to find sounds/instruments to incorporate in my piece. I used more acoustic sounding guitars as well as drums which were inspired by Solar Power. I then created my own line for the piano part. Then for the end, I just wanted to keep it simple with a single guitar track,  since it's a sad scene that didn't need too much music to accompany it. I really liked creating this piece and how it turned out. I'm really proud of how I timed everything and how all the tracks sound together!

WandaVision

I chose the scene in the last episode of WandaVision where Wanda is fighting Agatha and then becomes really powerful and basically harnesses Agatha's power to become more powerful than her and makes a new costume for herself and everything. In the beginning of the section I was working with, Wanda was looking very weak, so I started out with a synth that would portray a sort of dark and defeated mood. I then added in some piano as her leitmotif, and I repeated that throughout the rest of the clip. When Agatha realizes her power is basically gone and can't shoot at Wanda anymore, I cut off the synth suddenly to show how Agatha is powerless. Then as Wanda looks up and regains her power, I start adding in strings and drums to build up to the point where Wanda starts draining all the power out of Agatha. I sped up some strings tracks when she is draining Agatha's power and once Wanda stops and is shown in her new outfit, I created some chords with the strings, and then I stopped all the tracks except for the piano leitmotif which plays by itself until the end. I tried to do C harmonic minor, but I'm not really good at music theory, so I'm not sure if I got the chords entirely correct, but they sound okay. I'm really proud of how this turned out!
